Wood Green has the unusual position of containing the recycling centre that half of north London drives to. Western Road is here, and Hackney's residents come up to it as well as Haringey's. Living beside it helps less than you would think. The site can only be entered from Coburg Road, turning left — you cannot turn right in — which on a busy afternoon means a lap of the one-way system with a boot full of somebody's old wardrobe. What you can carry in a car is one or two loads of a flat, and a flat is rarely one or two loads.
The council collection is the other option and it has a ceiling on items and a fee attached, which is fine for a bed frame and no use for a kitchen. It leaves out construction waste of every kind, bricks and cement and plasterboard and paint among them, and rubble and soil with it. Anything it does take has to be waiting outside the front boundary at street level before half past six, not carried down from anywhere. For a mansion flat off Bounds Green Road, that sentence is the reason people stop reading the council page.
So the pile stays where it is until somebody comes and gets it. That is the job we price, and the load size is the unit: what fraction of the van it fills, with the floor and the lift asked about while you are booking rather than counted in hours afterwards. N22 hands us two very different buildings. The Noel Park estate east of the High Road is a conservation area of tight red-brick terraces where the parking is protected and the van has to sit where it is allowed to sit rather than where it would be handy. West of there, the streets climbing towards Alexandra Park mix Edwardian houses, thirties semis and purpose-built mansion blocks with communal stairs and no lift, which is a different carry again. We never try to load on the High Road or beside Shopping City — both are solid with buses and deliveries most of the day — so the van works from the residential turnings and we tell you which one before the morning starts.
