Haringey's bulky collection has one rule that decides whether it is any use to you, and it is not the price. Everything must be at street level, outside the front boundary of the property, ready before half past six in the morning and visible to the crew from the road — and the council says plainly that items must not be placed up or down stairs. If you live in a three-storey terrace off West Green Road that was divided into flats thirty years ago, that rule is the whole job. Getting a wardrobe from the second floor to the pavement before dawn is the hard part; the lorry that takes it away afterwards is the easy part. There is a ceiling on the number of items too, so a flat cleared at the end of a tenancy needs several bookings or a different plan.
The second rule is what the collection excludes. Construction waste — bricks, stonework, cement, plasterboard, paint — will not be taken, and neither will rubble or soil. In a postcode where half the terraces are mid-refurbishment that rules out a large share of what people actually want gone: the old kitchen, the tiles off the bathroom wall, the fence panels stacked down the side return.
