Bow gives you one of two moves and very little in between. Half of E3 is the stock the area was built from — the flat-fronted Georgian and early Victorian terraces around Tredegar Square, the long streets running off Roman Road, and a good many houses among them that now hold two flats, one above the other. Those are stair jobs. The front door is on or close to the pavement, the hallway is a width a wardrobe only just clears, and the staircase changes direction at a half-landing you cannot see from the doorstep. The other half of E3 is newer: the blocks on Fish Island, the buildings along the Lee Navigation and the recent towers on Bow Road. Those are not stair jobs at all, they are slot jobs. There is a service lift, a marked bay, a fob or an intercom between the van and the corridor, and a building manager who wants to know when you are coming. Nothing about a Bow address tells you which of the two you have until somebody looks at the building, so that is the first thing we settle.
The second thing we work out is the water. The Regent's Canal runs down the western side of E3, the Hertford Union cuts across the top of it, and the Lee Navigation closes the eastern edge, which leaves Bow with more waterway than road along much of its boundary. A loaded van crosses only where there is a road bridge, so two addresses that are a few hundred metres apart on foot can be a genuine drive apart by road — worth knowing before anyone assumes that a move within Bow is a short day. The canal-side buildings turn the same fact into a different problem. The good side of those blocks faces the water, and nothing on wheels reaches a towpath; the loading side is the other one, round by the bins and the barrier, and the walk from the bay to the lift is often longer than the walk from the front door to the water.
Getting out of E3 is the easy part. The A12 meets the road network at the Bow interchange for anything heading north or east, and Bow Road carries on west into Mile End and the City — though Bow Road and Mile End Road move traffic all day and neither is a place to stand a loaded van, so the loading itself happens on the turnings. Bow Road, Bow Church and Devons Road stations sit inside the postcode and Mile End is a short walk from its western edge, which puts the District, Hammersmith & City and Central lines and the DLR in play and is part of why so many E3 moves are one- and two-bed jobs with a date somebody else has fixed. What changes the job here is not which end of E3 you are in but which kind of building you are in: a converted terrace with a staircase, or a block with a lift and a bay. The window the building has given you, and the name of whoever controls the bay. Managing agents around the canals usually hand the lift slot to the resident rather than dealing with the mover, and some want to see our cover before they will confirm anything. Pass both on when you book and the van turns up to fit the window instead of waiting for it to come round again.
Because of the water. The canals and the Lee wrap round three sides of E3, and a loaded van can only cross them where there is a road bridge, so two addresses that are a short walk apart can be a real drive apart. It is not a problem, it is just a reason we plan the run between your two addresses rather than assuming a local move is automatically a quick one.
It is the ordinary shape of the older half of E3, so no. The terraces off Roman Road and around Tredegar Square put the tight moment at the turn rather than at the front door, which is where we measure. We bring straps and dollies for it, and enough hands that a wardrobe goes round the turn under control instead of being wrestled through it to save a trip.
Off it. Those roads move traffic all day and a loaded van standing on either one holds up everything behind it, so we work from a turning instead, and the crew size follows from how long that walk turns out to be rather than from the number of rooms. In the newer blocks the question inverts: the building has a bay of its own, and the work is getting the time in it confirmed.
Often, and it is always worth asking. A stair job on a weekday is usually easier to fit in at short notice than one that depends on a building releasing a lift window, because that half of E3 runs on the managing agent's diary as well as ours. Tell us the date you are hoping for and we will say straight away whether it is workable.
Goods-in-transit and public liability insured, and yes, quite often — managing agents on the newer side of E3 tend to want the documents in hand before they release a lift window, so we send them across rather than turn up hoping. On the older side nobody asks for paperwork and it all comes down to the padding instead: blankets over the furniture, straps on the load, and covers on a banister and door frames that predate every piece of furniture now being asked to pass them.
