North London does not have a campus on every corner, and that is part of why students live here. The Victoria line out of Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters and the Piccadilly line out of Wood Green and Turnpike Lane both drop into the King's Cross university belt in about twenty minutes, London Metropolitan University sits on Holloway Road in N7, Middlesex is a short trip across to Hendon, and CONEL teaches from the High Road in Tottenham itself. Rooms in N17 and N22 rent for less than the same room closer in, so the trade is a commute for somewhere bigger to sleep — and the room is all we are moving. Not a household: a bed, a desk, a chair, a couple of suitcases and the boxes. That is a small van and an hour or two, not a Luton and a crew of three, and the price you see reflects which of those it is.
The housing up here is Victorian and Edwardian terraces let room by room. The Harringay Ladder between Green Lanes and Wightman Road, the Noel Park streets behind Wood Green High Road, and the turnings off West Green Road and Philip Lane are full of them, and a house with five bedrooms can hold five separate tenancies. That is why so much of our work in the N codes is a part-load in the middle of a term rather than a clean end-of-year clear-out: one person leaving, four staying, and a shared hallway that has to remain usable while we carry past it. The two peaks still dominate the diary — June, when the tenancies that do line up all end at once, and the last two weeks of September, when new shares form before term. Both fill weeks ahead and the good Saturdays go first.
What decides the day here is not the mileage but where the van can stand in relation to your room. The cheapest room in a converted terrace is very often the top one, three flights up with a turn at every half-landing, and towards Archway, Crouch End and Highgate the street climbs as well — so a short but steep uphill carry can take more out of the morning than the drive across town does. Tottenham High Road is a red route with bus lanes where nothing may stop, and a single room does not warrant a full day's bay suspension, so what the job actually needs is the right turning behind it: legal, close to the door, and workable for the forty minutes we are there. Around Wood Green the Noel Park streets have tight resident-only bays that fill early, which is worth knowing the day before rather than at eight on the morning itself. Match days matter here, too. A Tottenham Hotspur home fixture closes stretches of the High Road by the stadium, and Arsenal event days bring closures and parking restrictions across N5 and N7, where a good number of London Met students rent — so we check both fixture lists before confirming a weekend date.

Top-floor rooms are routine here, so the stairs go into the plan rather than into the day. Converted terraces mean three flights and a turn at each half-landing, and on the hills around Archway and Crouch End the van cannot always sit outside the door. Early. June clears the shared houses whose tenancies end together, and the last fortnight of September fills them again as new shares form before term, and both peaks are taken weeks in advance. The Saturdays disappear before anything else, so book as soon as you know the date rather than in moving week.
