A clearance crew who know Hackney E8

What the council will and will not take changes at the borough boundary, and so does which tip will let a van through the gate. We work to whichever set of rules your address falls under.

No reuse and recycling centre sits inside Hackney — the three you may use are in Islington, Waltham Forest and Haringey.
A van or a trailer over four feet has to be booked at those sites a day ahead, and a household gets only a few van visits a year.
The council collection leaves out rubble, masonry, tiles and fencing, which is exactly what a Hackney refit produces.
London Fields terraces run three or four storeys over a basement kitchen, so a clearance is two staircases, not one.
Broadway Market shuts to traffic on Saturdays, and Mare Street offers no loading window worth risking a ticket for.

Hackney is the borough with no tip in it. Every reuse and recycling centre a resident here is entitled to use stands in somebody else's borough: Hornsey Street over in Islington, South Access Road in Walthamstow, Western Road up at Wood Green. On foot or in a car you can turn up at any of the three. In a van, or a car towing a trailer longer than four feet, you cannot — that needs booking a day ahead, the sites take a limited number of vans between them each day, and the same household is allowed only a handful of van visits across a financial year. For a postcode of tall converted houses where half the clear-outs are a flat's worth of furniture, that is a real constraint rather than a technicality.

The council's own collection takes the pressure off some of it, up to a fixed number of items and for a fee, and it is worth booking when what you have is a bed and a sofa. It will not take DIY and construction materials — rubble, masonry, tiles, fencing — and it will not take anything wet or anything with an edge sticking out of it. Whatever is on the list still has to be standing on the pavement outside your building before six in the morning, which in E8 usually means somebody has already carried it down three flights in the dark.

That carry is the job here. The terraces ringing London Fields run three and four storeys with a kitchen in the basement, so a full house clearance is a staircase worked from the top down and then once more from below ground. Doorframes were built narrow, half-landings turn tight, and anything assembled upstairs is coming apart before it comes down. Outside, Broadway Market closes to traffic on a Saturday, Mare Street enforces its bus lanes and loading rules keenly enough to catch somebody out every week, and the controlled bays across Dalston give short windows we would rather book than gamble on. The load size you pick sets the price, the van position is agreed with you, and we clear from the basement upwards so the last trip out is the lightest one.

Borough waste rules here were read from the council's own pages on 9 September 2026. They do change — the council's page is always the last word.

Where Hackney rubbish goes afterwards

Every load out of Hackney is tipped at a licensed transfer station and sorted there for recycling, energy recovery or a specialist stream. We keep the waste transfer note for each one and will send you a copy for your records.

How it works

Getting a Hackney clearance booked

Three answers and a date. Nobody has to come and look at the pile first.

01

Match the pile to a size

Choose whichever load size is nearest to what you are looking at. Under-estimate and over-estimate are both fixable at the door.

02

Say where it is in the building

Loft, third floor, back garden or garage. It is the carry that makes a clearance long, so it belongs in the price rather than in an argument afterwards.

03

It leaves, legally

We sort it, sweep the space and take the lot to a permitted facility. What is left behind is an empty room, not a bagged heap by the bins.

FAQ

Clearing rubbish in Hackney — what people ask

Why is clearing a flat in E8 harder than it looks?

Because the borough has no tip of its own and the three sites its residents may use are all across a boundary, with van access rationed at each. Anything bigger than a car load turns into a booking exercise before it turns into a journey, and the journey is the easy half.

Can you get a sofa up out of a basement kitchen?

Usually, and where the turn genuinely will not take it we take the piece apart rather than force it past a frame. Half-landings in these houses are tighter than the doors are, so tell us what came into the room in pieces and it will leave the same way.

Will you take building waste from a refit?

Small amounts of DIY waste, yes — bagged plaster, broken tiles, an old kitchen or a bathroom suite. Structural demolition waste needs a different licence and a different vehicle, so describe the load when you book and we will tell you plainly whether it is ours to take.

Do you work around a Saturday market closure?

Yes. Broadway Market shuts to traffic for the stalls, so a weekend clearance either loads early or works from a street that stays open. Give us the address when you book and the van position is settled then rather than discovered by the driver.

Can you clear a whole house between tenants?

That is a large part of the work here, for landlords and agents as much as for people moving out. A furnished flat is usually one or two van loads. If the building only allows access outside normal hours, say so and we will work to it.

Need it cleared in Hackney?

Pick the load size, give us the E8 address and the floor, and the whole thing can be gone this week.
