Term dates are not moving dates. What empties a room is the end of a licence or a tenancy, and universities publish those — so we read them rather than guessing, and we say where each fact came from.
A Queen Mary move is set by a date on a licence agreement, not by the end of teaching. The university's own accommodation FAQ puts undergraduate licences at roughly thirty-eight weeks running from September to June, and postgraduate licences at roughly fifty-one weeks running September to September. That single difference is why Mile End empties twice a year rather than once: an undergraduate room has to be cleared in June while the postgraduate along the corridor still has three months of agreement left, and the two of them are never fighting over the same Saturday. It also answers the thing students most often get wrong when they contact us, which is assuming a room has to be emptied when lectures stop. It does not. Queen Mary states that you do not need to move out during holiday periods and that the room is yours for the full licence period, so the only date that matters is the one printed on your own agreement.
September is the other wave and it is squeezed into a weekend. For 2026-27 the university set moving-in as Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September, which puts an entire intake through one campus over two days. Queen Mary publishes its own rule for that arrival period: you may drive onto the Mile End campus, but it asks you to unload within forty-five minutes and then move off campus to park, the driver has to remain with the vehicle throughout, and it adds that there is no car parking on campus during the rest of the year. Forty-five minutes is not generous for a car boot and it is tighter for a van, so an arrival is worth planning against it — boxed, labelled and carried in one run instead of six trips and an argument at the gate.
Not every Queen Mary room sits behind that gate. The university's arrivals guidance says there is no designated parking at Albert Stern House and Cottages, at Ifor Evans Place, at Lindop House or at Sherren House, and that parking at all of them is on local public roads where restrictions and charges may apply. That is ordinary Tower Hamlets kerbside, controlled through the day and busy with it, and where the van ends up standing is most of the difference between an hour's work and three. We agree that position when the date is booked rather than improvising on the morning itself.
Most of what we actually carry around Mile End is not a hall room at all. It is one room out of a share house on the terraces off Roman Road, Globe Road or Grove Road, let by the room, so one tenant leaves and three stay put. That is a part load — a bed's worth of linen, the books, the bike and about fifteen boxes — and it wants a small van and a couple of hours rather than a lorry and a crew. Tell us the floor and the front door at both ends when you book and the carrying time lands in the quote instead of in a conversation afterwards.

The university puts undergraduate licences at roughly 38 weeks from September to June and postgraduate ones at roughly 51 weeks from September to September, and it says the room is yours for the full period, holidays included. Read yours and book the van against that.
That is the university’s call rather than ours, and it publishes the answer: during the arrival period you can drive on to unload, but you are asked to be away within 45 minutes with the driver staying by the vehicle, and it states there is no campus parking for the rest of the year. Confirm the current arrangement with the accommodation office and tell us what they say — we build the run around it.
