Term dates are not moving dates. What empties a room is the end of a licence or a tenancy, and universities publish those — so we read them rather than guessing, and we say where each fact came from.
Imperial is the outlier here, because what empties its halls is not a term date at all — it is the day the summer programme opens. The college's own summer accommodation page gives that as Saturday 27 June, running through to Saturday 19 September, with check-in from 16.00 on the opening day and 14.00 after it. And it adds the line that matters most to anybody with a van booked: all departures are no later than 10.00. It also says that final-year students are not eligible for a summer room and will need to arrange something in the private sector. Put those together and the shape of an Imperial June is clear enough. There is a hard edge at the end of the month, the students with the most to shift are precisely the ones with nowhere inside the college to shift it to, and ten in the morning is the deadline on every departure day thereafter.
The second thing worth knowing is that "Imperial halls" is not a synonym for South Kensington. Three of the undergraduate buildings — Beit, Eastside and Southside — sit in and around Prince's Gardens within a few minutes' walk of the main campus. Wilson House is over towards Paddington. Kemp Porter Buildings and Woodward Buildings are in North Acton, which the college's own comparison page puts at roughly forty minutes away by tube. A move out of Woodward and a move out of Beit belong to the same institution and are completely different afternoons, and what you are quoted follows the second fact rather than the first.
Third, this is a large and predictable September as well as a large June. The college states that first-year students who accept Imperial as their firm choice are guaranteed a place in college accommodation provided they are eligible, which means an intake arriving on a known weekend into known buildings. Kemp Porter asks arriving students to book a slot ahead of time, says that during the arrival period its car park is strictly for dropping belongings off to avoid long queues, offers trolleys from reception and asks drivers to park off site afterwards. That is one building's published guidance and we quote it as such. We do not know what the others allow, we cannot check it from here, and we will not write it down as though we could — ask your hall and tell us the answer.
The rest of it is the ordinary part, and it is ours. A single room out of a hall or out of a share house in SW7 is a small-van job with a couple of hours in it, not a lorry and a crew, and it is priced that way. Tell us the floor and the door at both ends and the carrying time is inside the number you see, rather than arriving as a conversation afterwards.
