South London, for us, means the CR and SM codes: Croydon, Mitcham, Sutton and the suburbs around them. It is the part of our patch where two moves can share a postcode district and have almost nothing else in common. Central Croydon is vertical — the towers around Saffron Square, College Road and Wellesley Road are lift, concierge and loading-bay jobs where the building sets the timetable and the street barely matters. A mile out it is Edwardian terraces in Addiscombe, interwar semis through Shirley, Sutton and Carshalton with front gardens and side access, and older cottages around Mitcham's Cricket Green with doorways and staircases built long before anyone owned a corner sofa. Across much of the SM streets a Luton can park on the drive itself, which brings the carry down to a few metres and takes real time out of a full house move.
The tram is the constraint people forget. The tram network runs on-street through the middle of Croydon and along sections through Mitcham, and a van cannot stand on the alignment or narrow the swept path for even a minute without holding up the service behind it. George Street is trams and pedestrians only; Wellesley Road and the flyover are fast dual carriageway where stopping is out of the question; and the town-centre one-way system turns a missed turn into a full loop. Sutton has its own version of the same problem — the High Street is pedestrianised with vehicle loading limited to an early window, so a flat above a shop there is the first job of the day or no job at all. Then there is the ground itself: the land climbs steeply from the Wandle valley at Mitcham and Hackbridge up towards Purley, Sanderstead, Selsdon and Coulsdon, and on those roads the van's position decides the day.
What the region gives back is distance. Much of the route out of CR and SM is dual carriageway rather than side street — the A23 through Purley Way runs south towards the M23 and the M25, and the A217 out of Sutton reaches the M25 at Junction 8 — so a move from here into Surrey, Sussex or the coast covers ground far more quickly than the same mileage would in inner London. The trade-off runs the other way: a move north into town is slower per mile than the map suggests, and we build that into the timing rather than discover it in traffic.
